Wanda Dawe believes in the rural Newfoundland and Labrador tradition of community involvement. Living in the rural part of the province, she recognizes that communities thrive because of volunteers. She has observed the ongoing loss of our rural communities and our rural lifestyle, and believes that each person has to be committed to maintaining and improving what is valuable from our traditional way of life. Her personal commitment has been reflected in both political and non-political activities.
One of her favourite projects has been her "Cuts for Cancer" sponsored by Radiance Hair Studio and Spa, which she has held every year since 2004. During "Cuts for Cancer" sponsorship, ALL money taken in by the studio goes to the Cancer Society. Not even staff salaries are taken out.
She has had a long involvement with Health Care in the region. She is a past member of the Avalon Health Care Board, a past member of the Trinity Conception Placentia Health Foundation, past Avalon Health Care Board Representative on the BioEthics Committee, Memorial University School of Medicine, and volunteer television host for the Trinity Conception Placentia Healthcare Foundation.
She was vice-president of the Celebrate Canada Committee in Newfoundland and Labrador for the years 1997-1999. Here duties included participation in the development and implementation of strategic initiatives to meet the Committee mandate of the Department of Canadian Heritage, public speaking at citizenship and celebratory events throughout the year, related Departmental grants evaluation and contest adjudication.
In addition, she has been a volunteer adjudicator for the Annual Science and Heritage Fairs had by schools and heritage committees in the Avalon region, and a member of the Newfoundland and Labrador Employee Assistance Plan Association (NLEAPA).
